Catrin Finch and Aoife Ní Bhriain

Aoife Ní Bhriain is a highly versatile and gifted violinist, commanding both the classical world and her Irish traditional heritage. Meanwhile, Welsh harpist Catrin Finch needs no introduction, having built an impressive classical career while also exploring unchartered musical territory, most notably through her award- winning collaborations with Senegalese kora virtuoso Seckou Keita and Colombian group Cimarrón.

Together, Aoife and Catrin make a formidable musical duo, inspired by the cultures of their home countries alongside a multitude of wider influences. Their Music at Oxford performance is one of a select few to coincide with the release of their debut album of extraordinary and original material – sparks will surely fly!

About the artists

Aoife and Catrin are both fearless and intrepid musicians who, whilst each enjoying remarkable classical careers, have also run parallel with the classical highway to embrace a world of creative possibility, challenge and discovery. Their career similarities and musical capabilities are remarkable, and they both share a celebration of their respective countries’ native languages.

When the Irish-Welsh festival Other Voices Cardigan was given an opportunity to produce an online edition during pandemic lockdown in early 2021, its spirit of opportunity and excitement had to invite Aoife and Catrin to experiment with a new connection, inspired by the spirit of close neighbours separated by the Irish Sea. They met for the first time in February 2021 and gave their first filmed performance before the month was out, since broadcast on S4C, RTÉ and BBC Arts Culture In Quarantine. Their professional and personal affinity shone as they played Bach alongside traditional tunes from their respective Celtic homes. A new collaboration had been born.
