Sleep
A FILM BY NATALIE JOHNS
Documentary, performance, and a reflection of and meditation on the world around us, Sleep follows the journey of a very unusual open air performance. That performance lasted over 8 hours, coinciding with the duration of what is considered a ‘good night’s sleep’ and instead of worrying about feeling drowsy during the performance the audience was encouraged to sleep while listening, aided by the comfort afforded by 500+ camp beds.
The composer behind this all is Max Richter, and Sleep is an insight not just into the performance but an intimate glimpse inside his world and family. Illustrating the science and the story behind the work, Sleep is a refreshingly different look at the creative process, and an invitation to absent yourself from the rat race and simply…slow down.
‘If there was ever a balm for these confusing times, then it’s Max Richter’s Sleep, a lullaby of a documentary’
Joseph Walsh, The Arts Desk
‘a beguiling film’
Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
