Fratres: an in-depth exploration

Fratres is one of the best known and most loved musical pieces by Arvo Pärt. We can listen to it in its many versions for ensemble or orchestra, with or without the soloist. But in all these different forms and colours it represents something unique and essential to Pärt’s musical thinking. Written in 1977 and being one of the earliest works in his new musical language called tintinnabuli, Fratres embraces not only Pärt’s original compositional technique but also his spiritual roots and creative aesthetics in a broader sense. 

Kristina Kõrver will discuss the essence of Pärt’s tintinnabuli-music and follow the birth story of Fratres told by the sketches and manuscripts held in the Arvo Pärt Centre’s archive. Aile Tooming will offer an insight into Arvo Pärt’s world of ideas expressed in his musical diaries.
